Global Meetings Industry Day 2018: Celebrating Conferences & Meetings in Our Community
Nanaimo BC: Global Meetings Industry Day was founded in 2016 to recognize the enormous impact that meetings have on businesses, economies, and communities. Today, leaders in the events and meetings industry from across BC and around the world are coming together to support the third annual Global Meetings Industry Day 2018 (#GMID18).
Through strong leadership, and in collaboration with tourism industry stakeholders and service providers, the Vancouver Island Conference Centre’s mission is to promote and contribute to a financially healthy community and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors of Nanaimo, creating positive economic impact, stimulating growth for the City and providing cultural enrichment of the community, through the planning, management and delivery of conferences, conventions, meetings and events.
Within Canada, business events are responsible for 1.5% of the country’s gross domestic product while here in Nanaimo, the Vancouver Island Conference Centre’s meetings industry has resulted in an economic impact of over 62 Million Dollars since opening in 2008. Nanaimo companies and organizations benefit from having meetings take place in our city. It gives them the opportunity to connect with their industry peers and puts their companies, and their fields, in regional, national and international arenas.

- The Vancouver Island Conference Centre hosts over 400 events each year, including conferences, trade and consumer shows, meetings and special events
- The average length of stay for a conference visitor to Nanaimo is three nights
- Estimated economic impact for the city in 2017 directly related to meetings and conferences being held at the VICC was approximately 8.4 Million.
- Nanaimo has and will play host to regional, national and international conferences and events including the BC Nurse Practitioners Conference 2017 & 2018, Council of Advancement of Native Development Officers Convention 2016, Geological Association of Canada Conference 2016, International Science & Spirituality Conference 2018
